Where does SYMBOL OF PEACE?
In 1958, the British designer Gerald Holtom was commissioned to create a symbol for the first manifiestación to nuclear disarmament. In the Cold War, the demonstrators would travel the distance from London to Aldermaston, where were manufactured (still is) weapons arsenal British nuclear (the picture corresponds to that spot.)
For the logo, the conscientious objector Gerald Holtom weighed the idea of \u200b\u200busing the Christian cross surrounded by a ring, but eventually chose to take the symbols of the letters N and D (short for Nuclear Disarmament in the language nautical flags, see top panel) and overlay inside the circle.
Almost immediately, the symbol crossed the Atlantic and arrived in the United States by the hand of Bayard Rustin, a close aide to Martin Luther King who had come to London to anti up arms. Rustin began to use it in civil rights marches in the U.S. Later, the symbol began to be seen during the demonstrations against the Vietnam War, and even in the helmets of the soldiers involved in the race. Easier to draw than a dove of peace of Picasso, became famous in the United States and later around the world as the symbol of peace.
