6 pupils YEAR

LIGHT POLLUTION

Have you seen the Milky Way from your home?

50% of the population of Uruguay does not see the Milky Way.
We live in Redoubt and we realized that we can not see. Earlier this year
observe the constellation Orion, where the Tres Marias, we saw that in other neighborhoods as Lourdes Grotto are more stars than Redoubt. We investigated this is due to light pollution caused by artificial light sent into the sky that is reflected in air particles causing a luminous layer that allows the visibility of stars.
40% of energy is not exploited by sending to heaven, or whether they are paying 40% of energy that do not use.
This form of pollution is unknown to most people and affects us all / as:
- we can not see the stars.
- causes unnecessary energy expenditure.
- You can alter the development of plants that need light and dark periods.
- Causes death glare bird, insect, attracted by the lights
and imbalances in these species.
- can cause traffic accidents by dazzling drivers.
- light intrusion in homes can cause insomnia and eye damage.

To reduce light pollution can do many things that we also save energy and therefore save money.
The most important thing we do not send the light to heaven because we specified the birth on the ground which is where we operate.
Some of the recommendations reduce this problem are:
- Replace incandescent lamps are highly polluting
by low-power or high pressure sodium, are more expensive to buy but have more hours of life and light
is better exploited.
- Target the mouth of the reflector to the place that you want to illuminate.
- The cover glass must have the same level as the mouth of the reflector.
- Avoid the use of light for decorative purposes.
- Replace lights that have a spherical or globe.
If we can accomplish these actions reduce light pollution and save money.
Everyone has the right to contemplate a starry night sky, the stars are part of our cultural heritage
